A Child Sponsorship Project

While government education in Cambodia is supposed to be free, teachers are paid an unlivable wage. As a result, teachers charge each child a fee between 50c and $1 a day to pay for services including lessons, photocopies, and exam fees.

Unfortunately, many poor families in Cambodia earn less than $45 a month. Thus–although parents know education is a steppingstone out of poverty–priorities such as food and shelter take precedence, and education is often out of reach.

It is very important children are taught competent English in order to increase their opportunities for employment in their local area. Few government schools provide this service and private schools charge fees that poor families are unable to afford.
Your generous donation of $25 per month will support a child attending CHD. Furthermore, it will also ensure that the child you sponsor will receive a full education in all subjects. At primary school, the children will study Khmer, social studies, science, math, art, physical education. When they reach high school, they will also study chemistry, biology, philosophy, English and French. This educational support will continue until the student finishes school and, if your sponsored child achieves sufficient results in their final year of high school, you can continue to support your sponsored child at university.

Your donation will also pay for the child’s school uniform, which includes a blouse/shirt, skirt/shorts/trousers, and socks and shoes–if needed. Furthermore, your donation will cover school supplies, such as books, notebooks, pens, and pencils.

The goals for A Child Sponsorship Project are:

  • To continue to build human resources for development in Cambodia
  • To encourage youth who are studying at the primary level to study harder in order to prepare for their high school studies
  • To help poor, but skillful and gifted, students to get a better education
  • To empower the community to be self-sustainable by educated individuals

How much does this cost?

The cost to sponsor a child is $300 a year.

What do I need to do?

Please send an email to info@chdcambodia.org telling us that you either want to sponsor a child or require more information and we will get in touch with you.
So that we have sufficient information, please send us the following details about yourself:

  •  Your full name
  • The full name of the person who will be the sponsor (if different from above)
  •  Your address
  •  Your home telephone number
  • Your mobile telephone number
  •  Your email address
  •  Would you like to sponsor a boy or a girl?
  • What age bracket would you prefer your sponsored child to be? We normally select children who are eligible to attend school from Kindergarten up to Year 6, however, you can request a child who is attending high school if you wish.

When will it start?

Once we receive your email, we will contact you and provide you with information on how to easily make payments. As soon as we receive your first payment, you will be sent details of your Children with Hope for Development sponsored child.

Can I select my child?

You can tell us whether you would prefer to sponsor a boy or girl, and you can also select the age bracket you would prefer. We normally select children who are eligible to attend school from Kindergarten up to Year 6, however, you can request a child who is attending high school if you wish.

Once we receive your email confirming you wish to proceed, we will coordinate with Children with Hope for Development to identify a child who matches your preference.

The child will be selected using the following criteria:

  • The child comes from a family experiencing severe economic hardship
  • The child has a caring parent or guardian who values education and will encourage the child while he or she is in school
  • The child is willing to attend school regularly and is determined to try hard to achieve the best possible results

Can I contact my sponsored child?

Yes. You will be linked to a specific child and will be able to support and monitor the child’s progress through regular contact (letters, photos, school attendance reports, and academic progress reports).

Can I offer additional support to my sponsored child or the child’s family?
Yes. It is encouraged.

Why we need this program?

In power, the Khmer Rouge closed schools, hospitals and factories. Banking and currency was abolished, religions were outlawed, private property was confiscated, and people living in urban areas were relocated to collective farms where forced labor was widespread.. The purpose of this policy was to turn Cambodians into “ancient people” through agricultural labor. These actions resulted in massive deaths through executions, work exhaustion, illness, and starvation.

The Khmer Rouge attempted to turn Cambodia into a classless society by depopulating cities and forcing the urban population –”new people”–into agricultural communes. The entire population was forced to become farmers in labor camps.

Books were burned. Teachers, merchants, and almost the entire intellectual elite of the country were murdered for the purpose of Pol Pot’s agricultural communism. During their four years in power, the Khmer Rouge overworked and starved the population, while simultaneously executed select groups who had the potential to undermine the new state, including intellectuals or even those that had stereotypical signs of education, such as glasses.

Now–free of the ruthless regime–Cambodians are desperately trying to look to the future. However, they are still hampered by economic constraints.
There are a lot of students in Cambodia who, despite achieving outstanding results at secondary school, cannot afford to pay for tertiary education. While they understand the biggest steppingstone out of poverty is through education, the cost of university is well beyond the means of most students in their final year of high school.

Would you like to help?

Children with Hope for Development provides you with an opportunity to support a student with the capacity to achieve a university degree but, due to poor economic circumstances, cannot afford the fees.

Your sponsorship of a student will greatly impact the sponsored student’s family, community, and country.

By paying an annual subscription, you will enable the student to receive a free university scholarship from a registered, certified, and accredited Cambodian university.

Your donation will pay for the student’s university fees and other necessities such as text books, notebooks, pens, pencils, and other supplies.

Existing Sponsors of children

Existing sponsors who have supported a child at primary and high school through Children with Hope for Development have the option of continuing their sponsorship to support the student at university if the student has shown potential, achieved the necessary pass mark, and demonstrated a willingness to work hard.
Depending on the type of course the student elects to study, most annual university fees are US $600.00.
